Naveen Gupta, MD, is a board-certified pulmonologist and critical care physician. His expertise and clinical interests include sepsis, acute lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, and general pulmonary medicine. Dr. Gupta is committed to providing high-quality, evidenced-based care to all of his patients. He sees individuals in the Intensive Care Unit and on the pulmonary consult service at Jacobs Medical Center and UC San Diego Medical Center, and also provides care at the general pulmonary clinic on Executive Drive. As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Gupta trains medical students, interns, residents, and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research is primarily focused on the therapeutic and mechanistic effects of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in experimental models of sepsis and lung injury. This is in an effort to translate cell-based therapies to patients who are critically ill with severe lung injury from infection.Dr. Gupta has published his research in journals such as the Journal of Immunology, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Thorax, and Blood. He has also been given several research awards for his work, including the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine Training Award, the Parker B Francis Fellowship, and an NIH Career Development Award. He completed a pulmonary/critical care fellowship at UCSF, and did his residency and earned his medical degree at University of Michigan Medical School. He was on the faculty at UCSF, the University of Pittsburgh and The Scripps Research Institute before joining UC San Diego Health.
