The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners is a public health agency. Its division of investigations and enforcement is responsible for insuring that those licensed by the board stay in compliance with the Medical Practice Act and that those who are not licensed do not participate in the practice of medicine. The agency registers cases against midwifes, podiatrists, physician assistants, occupational therapists and assistants, respiratory therapists, athletic trainers, acupuncturists and clinical laboratory personnel. The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners is also responsible for investigating complaints and disciplining physicians who violate the Louisiana Medical Practice Act. It has authority over dentists, health maintenance organizations, hospitals, nursing homes and insurance companies. The board is located in New Orleans.
