Joseph H. Atkinson, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist whose expertise is in treating mental health issues of individuals with HIV. Dr. Atkinson is part of UC San Diego Healths Owen Clinic, one of the nation's outstanding HIV primary care clinics, where he provides psychiatric consultations to adults receiving care.Dr. Atkinsons research focuses on understanding the intersections of HIV, mental health and chronic pain. He is a founding member of the HIV neurobehavioral research program at UC San Diego School of Medicine.He has published more than 250 scientific and clinical articles on a range of topics, including HIV-related depression and chronic pain. As a professor emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Atkinson has trained medical students, residents and fellows in psychiatry. Dr. Atkinson completed a fellowship in psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed residency training in psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Atkinson is board-certified in psychiatry and is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
