Established in 1952 In 1951, employees of the Department of Public Welfare began to explore the opportunities of forming a credit union. After several meetings, ten employees were appointed to form a credit union. On January 4, 1952 an application for charter was filed and granted. Thus, the Texas DPW Federal Credit Union was formed.
On January 1, 1977, the credit union name was changed to Texas DHR Federal Credit Union to reflect the new name of our sponsor, Texas Department of Human Resources.
In February of 1986, the credit union's main sponsor once again changed its name, this time to Texas Department of Human Services. After much consideration, and the question of credibility amongst the members with our name changing again, Greater TEXAS Federal Credit Union was chosen since the membership was now more diversified.
The success and future of GTFCU lies not only in the brick and mortar buildings of our offices, but in the minds and hearts of our greatest asset, our members and staff.
