Daniel D. Sewell, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist focusing on the treatment of older adults with behavioral health issues.He is director of the Senior Behavioral Health Program and co-director of Memory Aging and Resilience Clinic. He is also a professor in Department of Psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine.His clinical focus is on assessing and treating older patients with depression and anxiety as well as patients who are experiencing severe behavioral disturbances as a complication of dementia. He also provides outpatient medication management and long-term psychotherapy for adults of all ages.His research has explored the utility of a widely used neuropsychological test to distinguish between signs of depression and early dementia in older adults. More recently, his research has examined sexual health among older adults, optimal prescribing of medications for people with dementia and the value of providing reading glasses to older adults in long-term hospital care, as an inexpensive yet effective means of improving patients quality of life.Dr. Sewell earned his medical degree at University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City. He spent his first two years of psychiatry residency training at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and completed his residency training at UC San Diego, earning a chairmans prize for research excellence. He went on to complete fellowship training in geriatric psychiatry at UC San Diego and then accepted a faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry in 1990.
