Christanne Hoffman Coffey, MD, FACEP, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician. She treats and cares for people in the emergency department, including those with life-threatening or critical conditions. Her care may include evaluation, resuscitation, stabilization, and referring patients to appropriate medical departments.As an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Coffey instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego Medical School. She serves as the fellowship director of the wilderness medicine program and co-director of two wilderness medicine courses at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research interests include wilderness medicine education, diving medicine, and aquatic injuries. Prior to becoming full-time faculty at UC San Diego Health, Dr. Coffey worked as an attending physician in the emergency departments at VA San Diego Healthcare System and Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley, Calif. Dr. Coffey was the inaugural fellow in wildness medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She completed a transitional internship at Scripps Mercy Hospital and completed her emergency medicine residency at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where she was chief resident. She earned her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She is board certified in emergency medicine. She is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP) and the chair of the Graduate Medical Education Fellowship Committee for the Wilderness Medical Society. In her free time, Dr. Coffey enjoys hiking, cycling, scuba diving, and stand up paddle surfing.
